A tiny planet of neurons

  • What do you see?
A 3D sphere made of human sympathetic neurons. The cells are gathered together into a compact, rounded structure.
  • Blue: Cell nuclei
Green and Red: Sympathetic neurons and their branches.

  • Where is it found?
This image shows human sympathetic neurons grown together in a 3D structure in the laboratory. Sympathetic neurons are part of a network that connects the spinal cord to many organs in the body, including the heart.

  • How big is it?
These cells measure in at about 500 micrometers in diameter ≈ the width of 6 human hairs

  • What can we learn from this image?
The image shows that human sympathetic neurons can grow together in a compact 3D structure and form a dense network of branches. Scientists can use structures like this to study how neurons grow, connect, and communicate with other cells.

  • What are their superpowers?
Sympathetic neurons help the body adapt to changing situations. When we need to react quickly, they can make the heart beat faster as part of the body's "fight-or-flight" response.

  • How was this image taken?
This image was taken with a high-content imaging microscope at 20× magnification

  • What are scientists trying to understand with this image?
Scientists want to learn how to grow compact, mature 3D structures of sympathetic neurons and connect them to heart tissue in the lab. This will help them study how neurons and heart cells communicate.

The story behind the image

Our heart does not work alone: nerves constantly send signals that help control how fast and strongly it beats. To study this hidden conversation, scientists are growing human sympathetic neurons in 3D and connecting them with heart tissue in the lab. This tiny “planet” of neurons is a step toward recreating that connection and understanding how the nervous system and the heart work together.
